Cervesario, knows all about beer

Thursday, 07 May, 2015
How many beer varieties are there? What glassware do you choose to serve lagers and porters? What dish pairs best with wheat beer? A cervesario, in other words a beer expert, knows the answers to all these and many other questions, and a lot of people consider this profession as the best one in the world. In mid-April this year, the elite group of professionals welcomed nine experts in the world of beer from Tyskie Browary Książęce.
April 20th marked a special day for nine beer experts from Tyskie Browary Książęce. Having passed an exam on beer and beer culture, they joined the elite group of experts and tasters of the golden beverage, known as cervesarios. These are 19 people permanently linked to the brewery in Tychy and the LECH BW brewery in Poznań.

“Wine has its sommeliers and coffee has baristas. It is these people who fire the senses in the lovers of these drinks. Instead, beer lovers’ dream job is that of a cervesario. We decided to bring this profession into being as a token of our respect for a rich world of beer,” says Paweł Kwiatkowski, Corporate Affairs Director in Kompania Piwowarska. Because of its diversity and a thousand-year history it deserves to have an expert who will be able to talk about its story professionally and interestingly, infecting visitors to our breweries with their passion for beer.

Before they took their professional exam in April, the newly certified cervesarios attended a 3-month course on beer and beer tasting. At the end of their training, they delivered a presentation in front of the Examination Committee made up of Brewery representatives, and answered questions during a Q&A Session. Unlike at the Poznań brewery where the gentle sex predominates among its cervesarios, the new beer experts in Tychy include four women and five men. Before they became cervesarios, they were guides, lawyers or historians, either by profession or passion. What they have in common is their origin and passion for beer, but also immense knowledge and experience. It all makes for a real feast for the mind and senses which visitors to the KP breweries can experience during their workshops.

Our cervesarios show them the art of beer pouring and serving, choosing the right glassware, and pairing beer with food. The training activities also offer a solid dose of knowledge about beer styles and flavours, but first and foremost, they are great fun and an original way to spend your time.

All my life is about beer and I can’t imagine a better job. I am happy that my work attracts such a huge interest. Being a beer expert in this precious and historic facility of Tyskie Browary Książęce is a genuine pleasure and distinguishment,” says Wojciech Kantor, cervesario in Tychy.

The term cervesario consists of cervesarius, which is Latin for a brewer, and impresario which is someone who not only has extensive knowledge but can also talk about it in an engaging way, as an impresario talks about music. The service was launched in Poznań in early 2014. Initiated by Kompania Piwowarska, it was an innovation in the whole of Poland.
